Fall Bass Fishing Tips

The summer / fall transition is requarded as tough times by many anglers, but follow some of my advice and it will not be so tough. A lot of us know that if we hit the lakes right now the surface temperature would be in the high 80's. Even though the air is cooling, some lakes remain warm beneath their surface layer, which keep bass deep.

Try and think about what I said in earlier articles about smaller lakes will turn over. What I mean is the smaller lakes will get into the winter pattern a lot sooner than the big Reservoirs. I will go back to the spring bass fishing advice I gave you which is to find the bait fish and I can promise you some great fish.

The bait fish will slowly migrate to the back of the coves to the shallow water where it is still warm and along with them, they will have some Bass Hogs following at their tails. Here again I say look for wood / rock / grass / boat docks.

At first light, cast a surface lure Example: Buzzbait / Propbait / Popper and my number one choice is the Kelly Kicker Fish bait company Explodin Toad. If you have missed the article on the frog, go and read it then stock up on the frogs. I kid you not, once you spend a day casting those frogs; you will be hooked as I am.

As the day wears on, you might want to try some crankbaits - Example: Square Bill / Lipless / Strike King Sexy Shad and last but not least the spinner-bait.

I got to tell you that I was fishing a cove and sitting on top of a school of shad and dropped a Baby Brushhog right in the middle of the school and when it was almost to the bottom, my rod bent double.

The big Bass Hogs are laying below the school of shad. When a small bass hits a shad and it sinks to the deeper water; Bass Hog is waiting for a easy meal. Always keep a topwater lure tied on and in hot standby if you pull into a cove and the top of the water is alive with fish.

By Midday the Big Bass Hogs will move to either Channels / Dropoffs / Ledges / Long points. A under water hump or a submerged roadbed, this is where I would employ a Carolina Rig softplastic or a deep Lip Crankbait.

One thing that you have to stop and think this is the time the Corp of Engineers start to drop the lake levels to winter pool and a lot of time the bass will pull out of the shallows and head for the deep water.

On the other hand I have caught some great Hogs this time of year, look for grass just under the surface and throw a spinnerbait (Quad Blade) in the grass and rip it. See if you do not get the surprise of your life when the Bass comes out of no where and explodes on your "Spinnerbait or Chatterbait".

If you have tried the grass and found that the bass are not in the grass, try just on the outside of the grass. I would pull my boat up to the grass edge to throw right down the line of the grass with a top-water lure then a spinnerbait, and last a Texas rigged Worm.
