Funny But True Snake Story
All my readers are fully aware of me and snakes. Well, it started last Saturday
June 28th.
We launched our boat at J.P. Coleman State Park and headed for Bear Creek at Pick
Wick Lake. Bear Creek is in Alabama and I was looking for the Christmas trees that I had placed in a certain
spot in hopes to draw in the big Bass Hogs.
We arrived just after sunrise and started fishing. I was using a 12 grape worm and
my buddy and his son were using the Sexy Shad by Strike King. We had not been fishing that long when I put
the worm down and threw a crank bait and rightoff the bat I got a hit.
Was not sure what I had but it felt good, and it turned out to be a 2 and 1/2
pound crappie. Not bad on a bass plug I thought and I stated that I would not mind about ten more of these
and we could have crappie for supper.
I did not get another crappie and went back to the worm, fishing it Texas rig
style and it was getting to around 10:00am when I felt another tap and as I went to set the hook, I noticed
that the line was coming towards the boat and I better do something quick or would lose the fish.
I reeled as fast as I could and thought I had set the hook and what ever it was
was up to the boat by now. I started to lift the rod up and my worm came into sight then the snake
appeared.
He was holding on just below the hook and was not about to let go. I did not have
him hooked at all but boy did he ever have a bite on the worm. I shook my line trying to free the worm or
shake the snake off with no luck. My buddy said to move my line to the front of the boat so he could grab the
snake with his needle nose pliers.
I should have stopped right then and thought about what I was doing. I did not
allow the line too close to the boat and as my buddy started to reach out, the snake let go of the worm and
tried to get my buddy. Needless to say it was close enough for the snake to hit the side of the boat and
allow him to board.
The snake went to the bottom of the boat and I proceeded to the rear of the boat
and motor. I figured snake in boat I am out of boat. I reached the top deck with no problem and was about to
enter the water when my buddy said that he would just grab the snake with the pliers and put him
back in the water.
There was just one problem that he had and that was he could not see the snake
which made it real difficult for me to understand why in the world would you go looking for this
snake.
Finally he found it and had a little problem grabbing it with the needle nose
pliers and getting the snake back in the water. Then he sat back and laughed at me for the longest time, said
he had never seen anyone get to the back of the boat that fast in all his life.
I knew the snake was out of the boat, but was I ever on the look-out for him even
though I saw him get tossed back in to the lake. I guess you would just have to have been there to laugh as
hard as my buddy did.
Keep the Hooks Wet!
